Dear Joeran, Roos, Marco, & Alan:

This message details the punishment that you are receiving for your involvement in the recent food fight, which took place on Wednesday, 11/04/2009.

As discussed during our meetings, your behavior during this incident was extremely childish.  In addition, your actions caused staff members to need to remain past their designated time of work in order to clean up after your actions.  Other students also felt the need to assist in cleaning up after your actions.

Please note that your punishment requires three steps, outlined below.  You will not have fully completed your punishment until all three of these steps have been completed, by the deadline indicated:

  1. Each of you will be responsible for assisting in aiding the cafeteria staff in cleaning during the next week.  Each of you will be assigned a specific day and time to assist in cleaning in the cafeteria.  You need to see Kristen Dayton, Host Family Coordinator in the Housing Office, on Monday, 11/09/2009.  She will give you the specific day and time that you will be cleaning.  By missing your assigned cleaning assignment this means you have not completed your punishment tasks, and you will then be charged a fine for your participation in the incident.

  1. The 4 of you together should compose a letter of apology to the Dining Hall staff, expressing the childish nature of your actions and how your actions caused the staff extra work and to stay beyond their allotted hours.  This letter should be worked on by all of you and delivered to me by Tuesday, 11/10/2009, by the end of the business day.  I will review this letter prior to giving it to the General Manager of the Dining Hall, who will then pass it along to the appropriate staff members.  By not completing your apology letter assignment this means you have not completed your punishment tasks, and you will then be charged a fine for your participation in the incident.

  1. The 4 of you together will put together a mini-Lecture to last between 5 and 10 minutes that the 4 of your will deliver starting Tuesday at lecture and continue THROUGH Thursday.  If you have class ending at 12:50 pm, such as Roos and Alan, your teacher will excuse you from class 10 minutes early.  You all need to report to the Fitness Center for lecture no later than 12:40 pm.  The topic of this mini-lecture should be “Actions and Consequences: Why is it important to think before you act”.  During this mini-Lecture you will need to explain to the rest of the student body why it is important to consider our actions carefully, and the affects our actions can have on others.  On Monday, 11/09/2009, you will need to see Peggy Laemmel, the Lecture Coordinator, in the Academics Office.  She will proofread the lecture that you have prepared.  YOU MUST HAVE SOMETHING PREPARED BEFORE GOING TO SEE PEGGY.  She will also fill you in on any details you need to know before starting your presentation on Tuesday.  Please remember that lecture next week will take place in the Fitness Center.  By not completing your mini lecture assignment or by missing any of the assigned lecture periods, this means you have not completed your punishment tasks, and you will then be charged a fine for your participation in the incident.

Once you have completed all three of these tasks, your punishment will be completed.  As of this point, NO OTHER STUDENTS have come forth to admit their participation in this incident.  If you would like to share the burden of this punishment with the other student involved, please encourage those students to come forward.

I sincerely hope that this is the last time we have any incidents like this on campus and that this is the last time I will need to speak to any of you concerning your actions or behavior on the EF New York campus.

Sincerely,

Justin Britton

Director of Housing
